Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c3gdnpjvj4ko\"><strong>Assassination of Ali Khamenei:<\/strong> <\/a>A joint US\u2013Israeli airstrike on 28 February 2026 targeted the Supreme Leader\u2019s compound in Tehran, killing him and members of his family.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Retaliatory Strikes on Gulf States:<\/strong> Iran launched missile attacks on US-allied states such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait, citing the presence of US military bases.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Economic Disruption at Chokepoints:<\/strong> The Strait of Hormuz became a combat zone, with naval engagements reported and oil prices surging globally.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Domestic Unrest in Iran:<\/strong> Mixed reactions emerged inside Iran, with both celebrations and calls for revenge reported in different Hormuz is the world\u2019s most critical energy transit chokepoint. It connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and facilitates:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Around <strong>one-fifth of global petroleum and LNG trade<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Daily transit of nearly <strong>15 million barrels of crude oil<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if alternative pipelines operate at full capacity, a closure of the strait would still disrupt a large portion of global energy supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Impact of Strait of Hormuz Disruption on India<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>India is directly affected by instability in the Strait of Hormuz:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>About <strong>half of India\u2019s crude oil imports<\/strong> pass through the strait.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India imports over <strong>88% of its crude oil<\/strong> and depends heavily on West Asia for oil and gas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India is the <strong>world\u2019s third-largest oil consumer<\/strong>, making uninterrupted energy flows vital for its economy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Short-Term Cushion: Crude Oil<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Indian refiners hold more than <strong>10 days of crude inventory<\/strong> and around <strong>one week of fuel stocks<\/strong>. India also has strategic petroleum reserves and can diversify imports from Russia, the United States, West Africa and Latin America. This provides short-term resilience, though at higher prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Major Vulnerability: LPG<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>India imports <strong>80\u201385% of its LPG<\/strong>, largely through the Strait of Hormuz. Unlike crude oil, India does not maintain large strategic LPG reserves, making households vulnerable to prolonged disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Limited Safety Net: LNG<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Around <strong>60% of India\u2019s LNG imports<\/strong> pass through the strait. There are no strong structural reserves, and spot cargo availability is limited. Prolonged disruption could severely affect gas availability and prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Likely Duration and Price Impact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Oil prices have already risen due to conflict-related uncertainty. The long-term price trajectory depends on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Duration of the conflict<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Degree of disruption to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In a prolonged conflict scenario, oil prices could rise sharply, potentially crossing <strong>$100 per barrel<\/strong>, placing heavy pressure on importing economies like India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A complete long-term closure of the strait remains unlikely, as Gulf producers \u2014 including Iran itself \u2014 depend on exports through this route for revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The assassination of Ali Khamenei and the subsequent Iran\u2013Israel war mark a turning point in West Asian geopolitics. What was once a shadow conflict has transformed into a direct, multi-front regional war with <strong>global economic and security consequences<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For India, the conflict is especially significant due to its heavy dependence on energy imports through the Strait of Hormuz. The situation highlights how geopolitical instability in West Asia can directly impact <strong>India\u2019s economy, energy security, and strategic environment<\/strong>.
